TyKerrius Jones, a running back atColquitt County High School in Moultrie, Georgia, has been charged with murder stemming from a July 5 shooting that left one man dead.According to Wayne Grandy of the Moultrie Observer,Jones was arrested and charged with murder and criminal attempt to commit armed robbery that resulted in the death of 68-year-old John Hester.In addition to Jones, Grandy’s report states six other people were arrested and charged, with two of them former members of Colquitt County’s football team:”Two of others chargedI-Key Pinkins, 18, and Brandon Wynn, 18also were members of the state championship team as seniors last season.Also arrested were Adrian Robinson, 19; Derrick Phillips, 18; Christian Glover, 18; and TyCameron Hayes, 18.”Jones’ head coach at Colquitt County High School, Rush Propst, told NationalHSFootball.com (h/tCraig Sager II of the Score in Atlanta) the following:I have been sick all day. From the time I heard the news I have been numb. My heart goes out to the Hester family as they grieve their loss and I don’t know what I am going to tell those kids back at the hotel about their teammate and former teammates. This is something I have never thought I would have to deal with.Propst also announced that Jones had been suspended from all football activities to allow the “legal process to take its course.”Jones was entering his junior year at the high school and played a key role in helping Colquitt County win the 6A state championship in 2014.
